The 4th International Dry Toilet Conference

We are preparing the 4th International Dry Toilet Conference. The deadline for submission of abstracts and posters was 31 January. The abstracts were peer reviewed and accepted by the Scientific Committee. Full Papers (not obligatory!) may be written by 15 May, 2012.

Dry Toilet 2012 Sponsorship

The Organising Committee of Dry Toilet 2012 Conference has chosen the participants to be sponsored to the upcoming Conference. We received funds from The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland in order to sponsor some participants from developing countries to the Dry Toilet 2012 Conference.
We have informed the persons who were accepted to be sponsored in April.

A pre-conference workshop Safe and Sustainable Sanitation will be
organised by Tampere University of Technology on 20 - 22 August, 2012.

The Registration of the Conference.


The main theme of the conference is Drivers for ecological dry toilets in urban and rural areas. The topics are as follows:

  1. Cultural, gender and social aspects of dry toilets
  2. Economy, profitability and marketing
  3. Productive sanitation (food security) and energy saving
  4. Hygiene and health aspects (including hygiene education)
  5. Dry toilet systems, technological options and urban applications
  6. Dry toilets' contribution to mitigating and adapting to global climate disruption (including ground water protection)
  7. Sanitation in disasters and reconstruction
  8. Operation and maintenance of dry toilets
  9. Legislation: Tools for promoting and controlling dry toilets

The conference dates are 22 – 25 August, 2012. The conference venue is University of Tampere, Finland. Companies and manufacturers are invited to participate in the exhibition to be held during the conference. The official language of the conference is English. Accommodation

Quotas of rooms in different rate categories have been booked at attractive rates in selected downtown hotels. Participants who wish to make a hotel/hostel reservation should follow the instructions below. Participants are advised to book as early as possible as there are only a limited number of rooms available at the special conference rate. Any reservations made after this date will be subject to room and rate availability. Please make your hotel/hostel reservation in advance directly at the conference hotels by using the congress specific reservation code. The cost of the hotel room is to be paid directly to the hotel. Room reservations are held until 18.00 on the date of arrival, unless late arrival has been agreed upon. After 18.00 hours the hotel is entitled to offer the room to other customers. If a customer confirms late arrival with a credit card, the reservation will be held after 18.00 hours on the date of arrival. In a case of no-show or unless the reservation is cancelled according to the terms and conditions, the hotel is entitled to charge for the reservation. If you need to cancel or modify your reservation, please contact the hotel directly. Please, refer to the cancellation and refund policy given in the hotel information on the hotel websites. All prices are per room per night, including breakfast and Value Added Tax.

Hostel Sofia
is no longer available for customers in August 2012. It will discontinue its operations in the beginning of August 2012.

Excursions and social activities

Morning jog on Thursday and Friday
For those delegates who want to exercise, Mr. Petri Juuti will be delighted to arrange a morning jog on Thursday and Friday. Jogging will start from the main doors of University's main building at 7 a.m., lasting for about 40 minutes.

Tampere city sightseeing tour including professional visits

- City sightseeing
A traditional sightseeing tour by bus provides a comprehensive overview of all the most important sights in Tampere city centre.

- Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) new learning facilities
English guided tour of the new learning facilities for energy and environmental engineering at Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK). The facilities include different water-saving toilets and dry toilets, a geothermal heating system, two different types of wind power plants, two solar panel systems and a greenhouse. Coffee will be served.

- Allotment garden in the suburb of Nekala
Professional visit to an allotment garden with three hundred huts. We can familiarize ourselves with composting of toilet waste in this allotment garden situated only a few kilometres from the city centre in the suburb of Nekala.

Visit to Helvetinjärvi National Park (about 50 km north of Tampere)

Price: 79 EUR
Minimum of 20 to 30 participants required
The tour, guided in English, starts with a 1.5 hour bus trip to Ruovesi, the location of Helvetinjärvi National Park. Coffee with a cinnamon roll will be served on arrival before the guide takes you to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Helvetinkolu, one of the gorges that are the most popular destinations in the park. After the half-hour walk back, visitors will choose between a meat soup or a vegetable soup, diplomas will be handed to the participants, and we return to Tampere. There is also a possibility for swimming in a lake.
